It appears fight fans will soon have the ultimate bout.
Rumors of a fight between, Floyd “Money” Mayweather, and “The Notorious” Conor McGregor, have been atop sports headlines for more than a year. The rumors began when the question of fighting Floyd was first proposed to The Notorious one, when he appeared on the Conan Obrien Show ahead his bout at UFC 189 against, Chad Mendes.
Since that time, McGregor has had several bouts. He went on to defeat Chad Mendes by TKO, and would go on to face the 10-year reigning Featherweight Champion, Jose Aldo. Winning by Knockout in a mere :13 seconds.
McGregor would then have two wars with Nate Diaz, before getting his shot at history.
McGregor would face Eddie Alvarez, for the UFC Lightweight Championship. Winning in devastating fashion by TKO in the 2nd round. Claiming his second UFC World Title, and becoming the promotions first two division Champion.
Since then, it appears that McGregor’s focus has been turned towards Floyd Mayweather.
And McGregor could indeed pose some substantial threats to the world’s best pound for pound boxer of all time. McGregor has an unprecedented ability to manage distance. He is very quick and fluid in his movements, and he could likely show Mayweather footwork that Floyd has never seen before inside of the ring. McGregor is younger, and because of that perhaps more durable than Floyd may anticipate. Nor, is Floyd a power puncher to begin with. Conor owns the size advantage, as well as the reach advantage. He is a southpaw, and although Mayweather has never lost to a southpaw, arguments can be made that a southpaw would offer a bigger challenge to Floyd. At least more of a challenge than an orthodox style fighter would pose.
On the other hand, Floyd Mayweather is without a doubt the best boxer the world has ever seen. He may not have the most appealing fighting style to fans, but he is the pound for pound greatest boxer of all time. He’s shown masterful displays of defense against the world’s best boxers. He has displayed incredible ring awareness and control, and garners the ability to frustrate his opponents into exhaustion, before obliterating them with the impeccable speed of his hands.
The proposed fight would have to be a boxing a contest, as Mayweather does not have the skill set to facilitate an MMA bout. However, boxing experience most definitely goes to Mayweather.
Most fight fans, and sports analyst have given McGregor, “a punchers chance”.
The two-division UFC world champion, receiving only, “a punchers chance”?
McGregor, feels as though he has far more than “a punchers chance”.
When McGregor showed up to support fellow Irishman, Michael Conlan’s pro boxing debut, he bumped into the boxing media, and had this to say.
“No one in this boxing game knows what’s coming, trust me on that. when I step in there, I’m going to shock the whole got damn world! Trust me on that! Look me in the eyes. 28 years of age. Confident as a motherfucker, long, rangy, dangerous with every hand! Trust me, I’m going to stop Floyd!”
Perhaps, McGregor can land one of those clean left hand shots, then what?
It has recently surfaced that McGregor signed his side of the contract, but the bout still hinges on the signing of one Floyd “Money” Mayweather. However, we may be closer to that signing than we think. The Nevada Athletic Commission, has approved the date August. 26th, for Mayweather Promotions, in Las Vegas.
