It’s finally here, fight day. It almost seems as though the fight of the century was never actually going to happen. Alas, the king of boxing Floyd Mayweather will go toe-to-toe with one of the most polarizing figures in sports today. The UFC’s biggest draw and double champ, the Notorious, Conor McGregor.
Notorious he has become. Only a few years ago the young man from Ireland still on social welfare and virtually unknown to the fans of the UFC had just been crowned the double champion of the well-respected organization, Cage Warriors. Since then he’s made a cinematic rise to the top of the fight game, garnering a left hand that has been coined the touch of death.
Those in the boxing community that are not familiar with Mystic Mac are surely in for a treat. In Mayweather’s past bouts he has always had the luxury of being able to put his opponents under spot lights, and often they have not been prepared. However, Conor is no stranger to the bright lights, and the big stage.
Just ask former featherweight champion, Jose Aldo; or former lightweight champion, Eddie Alvarez.
While Floyd seems to be playing mind games, by eating burgers to keep the weight on. Conor is playing mind games of his own. His team releasing sparring footage between him and two-division boxing world champion Paulie Malignaggi.
Floyd fired back with a video this week, claiming that he sent Pauly in to Conor’s camp as a spy.
All the drama aside, what if McGregor does pull off the impossible? What if the impossible fight to win is won?
The gloves have been changed from 10 oz. to 8 oz., the day is here, and it is time.
